Becoming a childbirth educator came out of my experiences as a professional doula (childbirth assistant and advocate) where I found most of the couples I assisted had received inadequate preparation from the courses they had attended. After much personal research on the many different accrediting organizations, I found the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) both matched my own birth philosophy, and is highly respected by childbirth advocates and medical professionals. I teach with joy, humor, and plenty of data. I love seeing people's surprise that they actually enjoyed their intensive childbirth course! I am fortunate to have had two wonderful, drug-free births, at local hospitals (UNC and Duke), but my experiences as a doula allows me to bring many different perspectives into class and taught me that whether a birth remains completely natural, low-intervention, medicated, or moves to high-intervention, there is always plenty that can be done to help each couple have as wonderful a birth experience as they could possibly have. Remember, if you don't know your options, you don't have any.
